Re: Proposal #2008008, Phased Equitable Rellocation of Non-Compliant .INFO Sunrise Domain Names (.pdf)

Afilias the company which run the .info gTLD have submiitted an application for new Registry Services to ICANN. The application is called the Phased Equitable Reallocation of Non-Compliant .INFO Sunrise Domain Names (pdf) and is a request for the Registry to be allowed to allocate names to developers and/or auction domain names which have remained suspended since the launch of .info in 2001.

Most if not all of the names in question show a registration date between 25th July 2001 to 27th August 2001, usually have a status marked “HOLD” and “TRANSFER PROHIBITED”.  Any many of these names have the Registrant Name marked as “Afilias Ltd / Sunrise Pending Reallocation” has just released the 2008 .info gTLD market share map as with the the 2007 .info gTLD market share map it provides a visual snap shot of where .info is beginning to dominate and countries where there is more interest in other gTLD extensions.

In two of the largest markets Canada & the UK, the number of .info registrations have now passed .org

Afilias has just announced today that users can now register .INFO domain names that include the Spanish characters á, é, í, ñ, ó, ú, and ü.

From the Afilias .INFO press release

“The introduction of these new domain names, termed Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), now enables Spanish-speakers to establish Web sites using words commonly used in Spanish such as pelí, teléfono-mó, Í, Piñ, and others
